Taxes may not be the first thing you think of during Thanksgiving week, but you might think twice if you are paying for a college education for yourself or your child. The American Opportunity Tax Credit is provided to help cover specific college costs, which now include materials required for courses as well as tuition and other expenses paid directly to the school. Many people may qualify for the maximum amount of the credit, which is $2500. Better yet, $1000 of that is refundable, so if your other deductions bring your taxes down to zero, you can receive up to $1000 as a refund. This aspect makes the credit preferable over withdrawing. The income limit to qualify for the credit is a maximum net income of $180,000 for a married couple or $90,000 for an individual. Check out this tax credit as well as other less-known sources of financial aid at Stealth Student Aid.
